  • 1. Can you fix my phone?

Possibly. But I suggest if you are on contract you look at options that will not invalidate that. I work with simple solutions for phones, and there are many more specialized repair places in the Kootenays I can recommend for more technical work. Short answer is, please make backups even of your phone.

  • 2. Can I leave my kids in the store while I shop elsewhere?

    Why?

Also, I do not operate in a childsafe room. There are heavy electronics, and tiny bits and bobs, and fragile things.  Any unattended child will be sat down at the internet cafe and I'll put on the Badger Badger original video.  Remember that one?

  • 3. Windows or Mac?

    Linux Mint Serena XCFE. 😛

Well, I originally started playing with Windows 3.1, and then 98, and ME and XP.

I worked with Snow Leopard for a lot of my early video work.

But I've sort of gotten disillusioned with both sides of the argument, and I really like the idea of open-source and creative solutions.

  • 4. Which entrance do I use?

Well, depends on the parking. Neither entrance has a ramp unfortunately.   I don't want to see you walk more than 50' with your big desktop computer, so if you are unable to find parking, let me know and I can move my car so you can park closer.

  • 5. Can you show me how to pirate tv shows online?

No. You want to know something like that, you have access to the internet.

What I will tell you is that engaging in any activity like that is risky, so it's more important to have backups and knowledge of keeping virus free.

But seriously dude, don't make this awkward.

  • 6. Can you help me with online harassment?

If you are being harassed online, I will help show you ways of being safer online. Online harassment is a big problem now, there's bullying and death threats, and it's generally very distressing, so I will do what I can to help. Sometimes  a bit of prevention goes a long way, so please try not to leave yourself vulnerable to harassment by posting personal data.

If you want to harass people, you are a horrible person, go away.

  • 8. Where did you go to school?

I studied Microsoft Office and Bookkeeping at College of the Rockies. I did my html at Selkirk College. I use many online resources such as Alison.com and Lynda.com.

My range of experience and knowledge allow me to see different solutions. And I will refer you to specialists as well as translate their geek speak for you if that is what is required.

I may have never gone to university, but I consider my experience working in the service industry and with  emergency services to be just as insightful and useful.

Any kids reading this, please don't use me as an excuse to not go to further education.

  • 10. What antivirus should I use?

That's really up to you. It's not a static solution, as there's always analogous evolution. Just because something works now doesn't mean it will work forever.

I may give advice, based on my experience, but I believe it is the user who can best determine what they want and need.  I cannot guarantee any antivirus is perfect.  I may have my favorites, but I also know if I don't watch them, they may become less effective as their management makes silly decisions etc.

The best antivirus is an aware mind, and good user habits.

  • 11. Where's Kaslo?

Kaslo is in the Kootenays, which is like the backyard of southern BC, Canada.

It's a short jump from Nelson  (that place where that movie was filmed), and Creston (that place that was in the news), and you may remember something about a Jazz Festival.

If you're wondering, I can do remote access, or travel some distance. Mostly though, I think our little village of Kaslo is worthwhile visiting, so I hope you'll stop by soon.

  • 12. What happened to the council filming?

Kaslo Village Council has a program in place to film their meetings. Any questions relating to current info  should go to them. I still have all the old meetings I filmed, because I feel it is important to our community to have that.  Please contact cao@kaslo.ca if you have questions about Village Council matters.  Please voice your concerns about accessible, accountable, politics, and demand to be in the loop when it comes to how your tax dollars are spent.

  • 13. Do you do websites?

    Er, awkward question.

Yes and no. I have some website clients. I would prefer to teach you how to build and maintain your own website.  The whole give a man a fish vs teach him to fish sorta thing.

If you wanted the most pain-free instant option that's local, I would have to recommend Pennywise. And I freely admit my conflict of interest here, so don't take it from me, ask their customers.  I can tell you as a computer person I love their backup systems and attention to detail.

  • 14. My internet sucks, what do I do?

    Diagnose it.

Is it the hardware, like your router or computer? Or is it your internet service provider? Is it due to a virus?

If you don't want to do all that work, or get me in to help, you can always use the Internet Cafe. But it's only cost-equal up to 6 hours, after that, it really is cheaper to fix your problem.

  • 15. What games do you play?

I like to play fps, and strategy games. I don't generally play online, I prefer co-op or solo. I like mods, and I like modding, and if I were a billionaire, I'd continue modding games I loved from way back when.

My favorite game is Unreal Tournament 99.

The game I am worst at is Angry Birds.

The game I find fun to play that's older is Castle of the Winds.

  • 2. What program do you use?

I like Corel Paint Shop Pro.

I could use photoshop. I could also use gimp. But I've been using Corel Paint Shop Pro since PSP6, or about the year 2001. It works for me, it might not work for you.  I do like some of the previous versions, and some of the modern stuff is a little odd, but, it has good features and versatility.

  • 3. Can you teach me Photoshop?

I can show you what I know about layers and art, which apply regardless of program.

I have a machine in the cafe with photoshop, which you can practice with, and I can give hands on instruction.  But you know what really helps you learn? Just plain trying things out.  And ask questions, ask every artist. Because everyone has something to share and teach.

  • 1. My computer is like my diary, what privacy does Mel B Digital offer?

Of course I will do my best to keep your privacy, however, I am also bound to report, just like doctors, lawyers, and other professionals, any illegal activities that hurt people. So please don't do that sort of stuff. Hurting people is bad. If you have stuff you wouldn't want your grandmother to see on your computer,  I'm not going to tell your grandmother, but just be aware of my responsibilities too.

  • 2. What about my files?

I will ask multiple times if you have backups. On the form, it asks you to confirm if you have backups, and sign off. While I can back up your data, if your data itself is corrupt or damaged, I cannot be responsible for it. Please please please people, do your backups regularly, and it will save you. Just like brushing your teeth and taking care of them.

  • 3. Is there a risk?

Any time your hard drive spins there's a risk. That's why you should have backups.  I will do my best to go over any risks with you, and explain them. There will always be an element of unpredictability when it comes to hard drive failure on drives greater than 5 years old.

Uh, sure, I guess. It's not really that interesting. I can even give you a running commentary if you don't mind listening to me blather. I may have other machines to work on at the same time though, and I would ask that you respect the privacy of others.

  • 1. Where's the coffee?

I call it a cafe because it's an internet cafe in that you can bring your coffee in. I make lousy coffee. I am surrounded by amazing coffee shops, who also have a variety of delicious snacks and foods, and they are awesome people. Please shop local. Also, I have no fridge, so that means no coffee cream or anything.

Yeah, totally. I'd recommend the Blue Morphos machine with the SSD. It even already has a nice logitech mouse on there, and saitek keyboard.

If you want to play some classics, I've got an XP machine and we can do some 16bit games from DOS.
